Dhaka: On Monday,
as anti-government protests in Bangladesh intensified, protestors defaced a
statue of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, also known as "Bangabandhu."
Following over 200 years since the Battle of Plassey in 1757, Bengali
sovereignty was restored under Mujibur's effective leadership of the
Bangladeshi independence struggle. In Bangladesh, he is regarded as the
"Father of the Nation" because of his crucial contribution. In the
midst of widespread protests that have claimed more than 106 lives in the
previous two days, Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned earlier in
the day and departed the nation, according to multiple news reports.

Hasina, according to
the BBC, departed for
Agartala, Tripura, aboard a chopper. She resigned, according to the
Associated Press, but no other information was provided. However, the report
was not confirmed by the Ministry of External Affairs or Agartala local
authority. A contentious quota system that reserved thirty percent of
government jobs for the relatives of veterans who fought in Bangladesh's 1971
War of Independence led to widespread protests against Hasina's government, according to the
private Jamuna television news channel. As a result, Hasina was forced to resign
as prime minister.
Hasina departed the nation in a helicopter, according to the
broadcaster, along with her younger sister Sheikh Rehana. Several hundred
demonstrators broke into the prime minister's official house a few hours later.
Earlier, as protesters invited the public to join a "Long March to Dhaka," the authorities
ordered a complete shutdown of the internet. Around 1:15 on Monday,
nevertheless, a government organization verbally ordered the installation of
broadband internet.
Since 2009, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's 76-year-old daughter
Hasina has ruled the strategically positioned South Asian nation. The 12th
general election took place in January, and in the midst of a boycott by the
main opposition party, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) led by former
premier Khaleda Zia and its allies, she was elected for a record-breaking
fourth consecutive term and fifth overall.
